Mapping an Aquifer with Airborne Geophysics

Summary

Helicopter-based Time-Domain Electromagnetics (HTEM) is being used to map the Mahomet Aquifer and subsurface geology in east-central Illinois. The Mahomet Aquifer is a sand and gravel unit that supplies water to nearly 500,000 people in Illinois and is designated as an EPA sole-source aquifer. This webinar will describe the geologic framework of the Mahomet Aquifer, the HTEM methods and protocols, and preliminary results, which show many 3D details of the aquifer framework that we’ve never known before.

AIPG provides NY State Education Department (NYSED) CEUs. To receive a certificate for NY State, you must attend the full webinar and complete and pass (at 70%) the assessment after the webinar. You can take the assessment multiple times.

Improve Engagement in Your Online Meetings (two-part workshop - May 7 and May 14)

Session description:

Are you tired of meetings where only a few people contribute, when you know there are other opinions and good ideas in the room?

In this two-part workshop, we will implement at least 10 ways to improve engagement in meetings. You will experience three versatile easy-to-learn activities you can use in meetings to help groups connect, make decisions and choose actionable next steps for nearly any topic. In small groups, you will identify engagement challenges and strategies to address them. You will learn by doing, so come ready to actively collaborate!

Bio:

Barb Bickford serves leaders who are frustrated with unfocused and unproductive meetings – and are willing to do something about it. Through her consulting, teaching, and facilitation, she helps leaders enhance group dynamics, foster collaboration, and transform their frustrations into productive solutions.

Barb was a Professional Geologist in Wisconsin DNR's Waste Management program for many years. When she retired from WDNR, she started a business to help people improve their meetings so they could work together on the pressing challenges facing us all, particularly in the areas of science, waste management and public health.

Barb is the owner and principal of Bickford Collaboration, LLC, in the east metro area of Minnesota. She holds a master’s degree in hydrogeology from UW-Madison. Connect on LinkedIn: barbarajbickford.

From August 10 to 13, 2024, AIPG will be holding its National Meeting in beautiful Durango, Colorado on the campus of Fort Lewis College, an educational institution of about 3,500 students situated on a mesa overlooking the town. Durango is located in southwestern Colorado in the foothills of the San Juan Mountains. The geology of the area is complex and highly diverse and includes amazing exposures of glacial geology, enormous volcanic calderas, exceptional exposures of Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary deposits, and Precambrian basement complexes.

The theme of the conference is “Resources of the West”, which is appropriate given that southwest Colorado includes oil and gas fields of the San Juan Basin, abundant base and precious metals mines, uranium deposits, coal deposits, and water resources. There is much history to learn including ancient native American history as well as early mining operations from the 1870’s and beyond. The conference will include two days of field trips, one day of technical talks, a plenary session of invited speakers, and an awards dinner. You will be able to enjoy a scenic ride on the Durango-Silverton Narrow-Gauge Railroad that operates daily between Durango and the old mining town of Silverton. There are also many attractions in the area for family and friends including river rafting, hiking, horseback riding, fishing, and camping.
