The new AGI President, Anna Shaughnessy, a retired geoscientist with the Earth Resources Laboratory of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has expertise in energy and the role of applied geophysics in industry, academia, and society. She started her career as an interpreter geophysicist with Mobil Oil and worked in the energy industry for 30 years, primarily in exploration, technology development, and deployment. During her industry career, she held leadership roles at Mobil, Saudi Aramco, Texaco, and Kerr-McGee. Shaughnessy transferred to the academic sector in 2011 and became the Executive Director of the Earth Resources Laboratory at MIT. She also is a former president of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists and served previously on the AGI Executive Committee as Secretary.

The new President Elect, Claudia Mora, serves as Dean of the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin. Previously, she held positions as Deputy Division Leader (Chemistry) and Group Leader (Earth and Environmental Sciences) at Los Alamos National Laboratory (2007-2020) and as faculty and Department Head (Earth and Planetary Sciences) at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Mora has served in many leadership roles, as past president of the Geological Society of America (GSA), councilor for the International Union of Geological Sciences, member of two U.S. National Committees, the National Science Foundation GEO Advisory Board, National Academy of Sciences Boards (BESR and DELS), and on the Governance Advisory Committee of the Science Foundation of Ireland Research Centre in Applied Geosciences. Mora is a member of GSA, the American Geophysical Union, and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG). She earned geology degrees from the University of New Mexico (BS), Rice University (MS) and the University of Wisconsin-Madison (Ph.D., Distinguished Alumnus).

The new Secretary, Maria Angela Capello (MAC) is a renowned leader in the energy sector and a relentless advocate of sustainability and geosciences. She is President of Red Tree Consulting LLC and Co-Chair of United Nations Economic Commission for Europe Women in Resource Management and has advanced leading roles in Kuwait Oil Company, Halliburton, and Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA). She is a member of the GEO National Science Foundation Advisory Council and is the Chair of the Management Technical Section of the Society of Petroleum Engineers International (SPE), and the Sustainability Committee of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). Her work has been recognized by the Italian Government through the "Star of Italy" honor (knighthood), and by the UNESCO endorsing her work leading the "Geosciences in Action - Advancing Sustainable Development." She is an Honorary Member of SPE and Lifetime Member of SEG, and has been a Distinguished Lecturer for SPE, SEG, and AAPG.  She is a Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences candidate at the University of Plymouth (United Kingdom) and has a M.Sc. in Geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines.

The new Member at Large, Dawn Garcia, is a hydrogeologist and a licensed professional geologist with over 35 years of experience in environmental permitting and compliance, mine life cycle planning, and hydrologic projects. She has worked in characterization, remediation, and reclamation projects at sites ranging from mineral development to operations to closure. She has strong experience in high-level reviews, due diligence, and preparation of documents associated with investor disclosure. She has visited hundreds of mineral development projects and mining operations. Garcia has served as the Geologist Member of the Arizona Board of Technical Registration by appointment of the Governor. She has been a member of the American Institute of Professional Geologists for over 30 years and received the Martin Van Couvering Memorial Award for distinguished service to the profession of geology. She served as 2023 President of the organization. Dawn is a Senior Associate with Stantec in Tucson, Arizona.

Continuing on the AGI Board of Directors are Past President Keri A. Nutter, Treasurer Doug Bartlett, Member at Large Shirley Jackson, and Member at Large Sandra Carlson.

As part of AGI’s Geoscience Program Adaptation to Natural Disruptive Events (GRANDE) research project, we are pleased to announce the launch of a new game which provides insights into how individuals assess and prioritize natural hazard risks when making decisions about where to live and work. By providing a variety of job offer scenarios, the game allows participants to weigh various employment factors, potential risks from natural hazards, and domicile considerations as they narrow down job offers and make their final choice.

The game takes approximately five minutes to play and offers a fascinating look at how we consider natural hazards in our daily lives. The game is open to all U.S. residents who are at least 18 years old and are either geoscientists or non-geoscientists. Please consider sharing this email with colleagues who may be interested.

The TLA will be held in Denver, Colorado, and features two tailored sessions: one for elementary educators teaching grades K-4 that will run from July 7-10, and another for middle school educators teaching grades 5-8 from July 10-13, 2024. These sessions will provide hands-on, interactive professional development opportunities in a supportive learning environment. Periodic webinars following the in-person sessions will provide ongoing support and networking throughout the next academic year.
    
Dr. Ed Robeck, AGI's Director of Education and Outreach, highlighted the academy's unique focus: "The Teaching and Learning Academy is a significant initiative aimed specifically at educators who started teaching earth science relatively recently. We are committed to empowering these educators with the tools and professional community needed to inspire their students and excel in their teaching careers."

Financial support for academy participants is provided, including reimbursement for travel expenses up to $200 and complimentary room and board during the academy.

Organized by AGI, Earth Science Week is a celebration and public awareness campaign reaching millions of people worldwide each year with information about geoscience. The contests provide an opportunity for individuals — including, in many cases, students producing entries as part of a classroom project — to explore and demonstrate their understanding of Earth.
 
Evelyn MacMichael of Oakland, California, won first place in the visual arts contest. Finalists were Owen Holt of Youngstown, Ohio; Kendra Schirckel of Poland, Ohio; Maxwell Wernicki of Poland, Ohio; Nathan Xu of Clyde Hill, Washington. Students in grades K-5 made two-dimensional artworks illustrating how land, water, air, and living things interact in a sustainable world.
 
Litzia Galvan of Placentia, California, won first place in the photo contest. Finalists were Audrey Collins of Cullowhee, North Carolina; Vera Hsiang of Corpus Christi, Texas; Taia Saurer of Mission Viejo, California; Michael Sipos of Naples, Florida. Submissions illustrated the ways geoscience informs local efforts to build a sustainable world.
 
Aislynn Carroll of Virginia Beach, Virginia, won first place in the essay contest. Finalists were Sophia Altinok of Virginia Beach; Kimberly Bolanos of Nyack, New York; Raizel Dino of Virginia Beach; Arijus Knasas of Virginia Beach. Students in grades 6-9 wrote essays of up to 300 words exploring how the Earth sciences can help achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals in areas such as poverty, nutrition, education, equality, ecosystems, climate change, and/or industrial innovation.
 
Grace Yan of Morgantown, West Virginia, won first place in the video contest. Finalists were Zainab Bie of Delhi, India; Maggie Rose of El Granada, California; Malia Tapp of San Mateo, California; Ashna Tumuluri of Redwood City, California. Individuals and teams created brief, original videos exploring the many ways people are using the Earth sciences to make decisions that maintain and strengthen the planet's ability to support thriving life.

Given annually, this award is presented to one teacher of students ranging from kindergarten through grade eight in the United States or Key stages 1-3 in the United Kingdom. The award recognizes leadership and innovation in Earth science education.

Entrants are asked to submit an application packet including a curriculum vitae or resume, letters of recommendation, an essay, and an exemplary Earth system science lesson plan, preferably that they have implemented in their instruction. Submissions are stronger if they address current trends in Earth science education.

The winner of the Roy Award will receive a monetary prize of $2,500 and a travel grant of up to $1,500 to attend the upcoming National Science Teaching Association National Conference in spring of 2023. To be eligible, applications must be submitted by January 20, 2023.

The award is given in honor of Dr. Edward C. Roy Jr., a strong and dedicated supporter of Earth science education. "Bill was a powerful, positive force in the geoscience community, leading not only through his work in research, teaching, and numerous publications and presentations worldwide, but also in his service to geoscience professional societies," said AGI Executive Director Jonathan Arthur. The topic is especially important in this time of increased pressures on natural systems, decreased accessibility to field sites, degradation of irreplaceable geological resources, and raised international awareness of the importance of geoheritage, geodiversity, and geoconservation. Responsible sampling is essential to protecting important geoheritage sites, being respectful of indigenous cultures, and in consideration of other societal issues.

Students and professionals at all career stages are invited to take this 15- to 20-minute survey. All responses will be submitted anonymously. The results will be presented in aggregated form at the 2022 GSA Annual Meeting forum on Culture and Ethics of Geological Sampling at noon on October 10 and presented to GSA with recommendations for community-based guidelines for ethical and responsible geological sampling into the future.

In this data brief we examine the pandemic-related restrictions to facility access, health and safety protocols, and to meeting and travel for academic and non-academic geoscientists from January through August 2021. We also explore changes in concerns moderately to extremely driven by the pandemic over this period for students, academic faculty, and non-academic geoscientists.
