AIPG’s Commitment to Inclusiveness

In response to the current racial unrest in our country and across the world, AIPG is restating our commitment to operate as an inclusive organization dedicated to the highest standards of personal integrity and professional conduct, where all are welcomed and encouraged. AIPG is, and must continue to be, an organization where geologists are encouraged to join and participate as students and professionals, on the Section and/or National level, without regard to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity or expression, religion, age, sexual orientation, nationality, or disability. The AIPG Code of Ethics states clearly in Standard 4.3 that members are ethically bound to embrace and develop a diverse and inclusive workforce. Embracing this standard will strengthen our organization and our profession. To that end, discrimination of any form will not be tolerated.  AIPG welcomes members of diverse backgrounds, and we are committed to listening to and trying to improve the experiences of under-represented groups.

To address these concerns, AIPG is currently drafting a Diversity and Inclusion Position Statement and will form an ad hoc Diversity and Inclusion Committee during our June Executive Committee meeting. The Diversity and Inclusion Committee will assess AIPG’s strengths and weakness associated with diversity and inclusion, and follow up with the identification of opportunities and actions to enhance diversity and inclusion in our organization and in the broader geoscience community. Initial committee activities will include the following:

  • Reviewing membership demographics and the social climate of the organization through a member survey

  • Conducting unconscious bias training for the Executive Committee

  • Developing a strategy and action plan to address issues based on the survey results following best practices of diversity and inclusion

  • Incorporate feedback from the membership in the strategy and action plan

Please participate in the surveys that are sent to membership from the Diversity and Inclusion Committee.  If you would like to provide specific suggestions directly to the Executive Committee, please do so without hesitation.  We need your input!

Nice start on the diversity and inclusiveness statement for AIPG. I mentioned to Dawn yesterday day that 45-min diversity awareness training video produced by possibly Steve Baker (AIPG California Section) should be a requirement for new CPG applicants which Nat'l HQ can track electronically as a check off the box item for regional screening committees to acknowledge as part of approving their application. This video could also be made an optional training course for optional CEU or PDH credit for those CPG's with professional development requirements. Cheers, Mark Rogers
