The American Institute of Professional Geologists has been monitoring the evolving situation with respect to the COVID-19 pandemic. The National Executive Committee in conjunction with the California Section Organizing Committee, has made the difficult decision to postpone the 2020 AIPG Annual Meeting that was scheduled to take place this October in Sacramento, California.

The health and safety of our members and other attendees is of primary importance to AIPG. Given the extent of the COVID-19 pandemic and the uncertainty surrounding the spread of the infection, we felt that having an in-person meeting would present a safety concern that we could not, in good conscience, ignore. Health and safety alone were not the only factors we considered. Uncertainty surrounding state and local government orders with respect to the size of public gatherings, difficulty with air travel, implementation of travel restrictions for public employees and private businesses, and the financial impact of a late meeting cancellation all played into this decision. Ultimately, an analysis of these factors showed clearly that postponing our Annual Meeting was the best choice for AIPG members and AIPG itself. We understand that this decision will be disappointing for our members and partner organizations. Nevertheless, we believe this to be the wisest course of action in an effort to minimize the potential exposure to COVID-19 of those who participate in our Annual Meeting.

The next Annual Meeting of AIPG is scheduled for October 23-26, 2021 at the Hilton Arden West, in Sacramento, California. Meanwhile, the National Office Staff and the National Executive Committee are working hard to ensure that AIPG Advisory Board elections and the transition to the 2021 National Executive Committee will take place with minimal disruption to the governance of the Institute. We are also working diligently to determine how best to acknowledge those who have been recognized by the AIPG Awards and Honors Committee, for their professionalism and dedication to AIPG and our profession.

AIPG continues to serve our members and our profession as we navigate the uncertainty associated with the COVID-19 virus. We welcome your thoughts and suggestions as we address the challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic.

With Best Regards,

Aaron
